Diabetes overvew

Dun Laoghaire Lions Club embraces the vision of Lions Clubs International in their Diabetes Strategy:

‘To reduce the prevalence of Type2 diabetes and improve the quality of life for those with diabetes’
This strategy is achieved by making adults aware that type 2 diabetes is a lifestyle disease if left untreated will contribute to serious chronic diseases and reduce life and health span.

The progression of the disease is silent for up to 20 years and manifests itself in the individual by being overweight, high blood pressure, poor circulation, heart problems, disrupted liver metabolism with a marked change in liver function that promotes obesity, lethargy and food cravings.

Nearly 1 in 2 adults in Ireland are at risk or are suffering from Diabetes or Prediabetes. It is a silent asassin to health and longevity and is growing at a rate of 7 % per year.

Prediabetes is where your body is not controlling your blood sugar optimally and the elevated blood sugar will gradually cause internal damage that will lead to Diabetes.

The root cause for Prediabetes is the body becoming insensitive to the body's Insulin signal due to over intake of simple sugars combined with under activity that is causing the body to store excess sugars as fat in muscles and then the liver. The journey from Prediabeteic to Diabetic is about 20 years and may appear symptomless.

By controlling sugar intake and getting regular active exercise (like a brisk walk for 40 mins.) you can reverse the progress of Prediabetes and increase your chances of not becoming Diabetic.

Ireland is experiencing a Diabetes Epidemic

•      854,165 adults over 40 in the Republic of Ireland are at increased risk of developing (or have) Type 2 diabetes

•      There are a further 304,382 in the 30 – 39-year age group that are overweight and not taking the weekly 150 minutes recommended physical activity

•      This means that there are over 1,158,547 adults in Ireland that need to consider making changes to their daily behaviours in terms of eating healthily and being more active (45% of the adult population over 19)
